Advocacy Action Center

Welcome to the American Academy of Pediatrics' Federal Affairs Advocacy Action Center, your resource for finding the information you need to be an effective advocate on issues affecting the health of our nation's children.

For 38 years, the AAP has had a Washington, DC office fighting for pediatricians and their patients at the federal level! Get involved by clicking on the links below to make a difference and better the lives of our nation's children.

On Friday, October 3, 2008, the President signed the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act into law. This legislation improves the mental health of all Americans, especially children and adolescents, by requiring businesses that offer health insurance provide equal coverage for both physical and mental health services, including co-payments, deductibles, out-of-pocket expenses, and coverage of hospital days and outpatient visits. We thank our Key Contacts who sent their members of Congress letters requesting passage of this important legislation - you made the difference! Urge Democrats and Republicans to make children's health and well being a top priority in the 2008 presidential election. Check out our 2008 Election Center for more information about the 2008 presidential elections, including the candidates’ health plans and AAP’s access principles! Urge your members of Congress to support the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act to give FDA strong authority to regulate tobacco and keep it out of the hands of children. Urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor AAP-endorsed legislation to reauthorize the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program. Learn more about AAP endorsed federal legislation on the MediKids Health Insurance Act, FDA regulation of tobacco, mental health parity and other key issues.
