TAKE ACTION ON PEDIATRIC DRUG AND DEVICE LEGISLATION!

On July 12, the House passed three critical pediatric provisions that will improve medications prescribed to children and assist the development of medical devices designed specifically for their use. Renewal of the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA) and the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA), and enactment of the Pediatric Medical Device Safety and Improvement Act are now closer to becoming a reality.

Contact your senators and representative to them to support pediatric drug and device legislation. A sample letter to email your members of Congress is below.

Subject: Support Pediatric Drug and Device Legislation
Dear [Elected Official]:

As a constituent and pediatrician, I'm asking you to support and pass as soon as possible the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act (BPCA), the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA), and the Pediatric Medical Device Safety and Improvement Act. All three were recently included in both the House passed H.R. 2900, and the Senate passed S. 1082. The Senate and the House must now work together in conference to pass final legislation on these pediatric issues. I encourage them to do so as soon as possible.

BPCA and PREA are two laws that test medicines and label them for use in children, and the pediatric device bill will provide incentives for developing pediatric medical and surgical devices. Both BPCA and PREA will expire on Sept. 30, 2007 unless they are reauthorized by Congress. Critical pediatric medical devices will go undeveloped without this needed legislation.

Please pass pediatric drug and device legislation this summer, and maintain a commitment to improving the health of our nation's children.

Sincerely,
