SCHIP Reauthorization -- Background and Resources

Reauthorizing and fully funding the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is the Academy’s number one priority in 2007.

This page will provide you with the resources you need to get active and stay involved in efforts to help secure full federal funding for SCHIP reauthorization and Medicaid:

  • The AAP and the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) released a set of state-by-state fact sheets to inform legislators and the public about SCHIP. The fact sheets provide state-by-state data on enrollment, eligibility, covered benefits, and related issues to show how the program serves children. Use the fact sheets when meeting with your elected officials to show them how the program impacts children in your state.

  • AAP President Jay E. Berkelhamer also testified Feb. 14 before the U.S. House of House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health hearing on the future of SCHIP. To read the full testimony, click on the link on the right side of this page.

  • Pediatricians can also take action on SCHIP reauthorization by calling or faxings their members of Congress. Use the AAP SCHIP Leave-Behind and the SCHIP Newspaper Ad available at the links to your right for more information and to leave behind when contacting members of Congress.

If you have any questions about SCHIP funding and reauthorization, please contact Bob Hall, AAP Department of Federal Affairs, 800-336-5475, ext. 3309, or rhall@aap.org.
